Wheat Production Goes Up 7% This Year, Ministry

    Khartoum - Wheat Research Program at the Agricultural Research Council and the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) held a celebration to honor the farmers whose wheat production this year was extraordinary.

    Dr. Gaafar Ahmed Abdallah, State Minister of Agriculture, said it was necessary to honor the farmers with extraordinary production this year, those whose efforts yielded in a 7% increase in the overall production compared to last year, and the step of honoring them, is one of the efforts made to increase production and reduce the amount of funds spent on wheat imports as well as realizing food security. He commended the technical bodies which contributed to this achievement and called for integrating efforts and promised more effort to increase production.
    Professor Ibrahim Ahmed Aldekhairi, Head of the Agricultural Research Council, commended the role played by scientists and the performance of farmers in the states of White Nile State, Blue Nile State, Northern State, River Nile State, Gezira State, and Kasala State.
    Agricultural technologies, he added, have been delivered to farmers through The Arab Food Program and the Food Security Program of the African Development Bank and pointed out that the farmers' productivity averaged 17-20 sacks of wheat per acre this year.
    Dr. Osman Suleiman Abdallah, Representative of the Regional Coordinator of the project for the reinforcement of food security in Arab countries, commended the role played by the Wheat Research Program in realizing the strategic goals which include realizing Arab food security, developing and increasing the quality of farming operations, and utilizing technology in boosting productivity.
